Located in the northern coastal valley region of Puerto Rico, Bayamon is the second most populous city on the entire island. Bordered by the proximity to San Juan, Bayamon does not have an airport in the city but has much to offer in terms of historical and cultural significance. Bayamon was first established in 1772 by Juan RamÃrez de Arrellano. The city is known as "El Pueblo del Chicharrón," or fried pig skin city. Others say the name Bayamon was derived from the Taino word Bayamongo, one of the rivers which crosses this picturesque city. With constant easterly trade winds, the tropical Caribbean weather makes Bayamongo a wonderful destination throughout the year. Bayamon is considered part of the larger metropolitan area of San Juan. The city is situated in a fertile valley filled with rivers. Sugar, tobacco, grapefruit, vegetables, and coffee are harvested from the land. Sugar is a major industry and the sugar mills are still some of Bayamon's major industrial attractions. Bayamon has a thriving economy and this bustling city is considered among the most progressive on the island.
