It could have been defined as a resting area and landmark for religious travellers and pilgrims heading towards Chiusi, Castiglion del Lago, and Arezzo. This information supports the theories of historians who believe that the Renaissance settlement was built over early-Christian foundations, which accounts for its exclusively religious use during the late-Middle Ages. It is worth mentioning that even Saint Margaret appears to have rested here after the death of Arsenio, before she permanently settled in Cortona.
