First occupied by the Woodland tribe of hunters and trappers from around 1000 BC, Knoxville later became the home the Shawnee and Creek for a brief period. European settlers moved into the area around 1786, and the city was named Knoxville in 1791 in honor of an American Revolutionary War general.
