Ko Samui is the second largest island in Thailand. Until the 1970s, the community was largely isolated and self-sufficient, having little contact with even mainland Thailand. Today, however, its pristine white sand beaches and tropical climate attract thousands of visitors every year, and tourism is now this island resort's main industry. Though Chaweng Beach, the most popular destination, is now crowded with tourists during Christmas and summer vacation, there are still many places that remain relatively undeveloped and where local culture remains well preserved. In addition to being a great beach getaway for visitors from more temperate climes, Ko Samui is also part of Thailand's Ang Thong National Marine Park, an archipelago that serves as home to many exotic species.
