Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay and the southernmost capital on the continent that was founded in 1680 and established in 1828 as a buffer state between Brazil and Argentina. Known for its wonderful beach resorts along the Atlantic and white sandy beaches, the city features a mix of French, Spanish, Portuguese and British influenced architecture. Places of interest include the Museo Histórico Nacional, a collection of four buildings filled with art and artifacts, and the Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes, which displays works from South American artists. The whole city becomes an antique market on Saturday with jewelry, silver, and art offered for sale. There is also plenty of nightlife action between the casino, tango clubs, discos and other night spots.
