Situated in the state of Oaxaca along Mexico's southwestern beaches rests the tranquil picturesque community of Puerto Escondido. Initially established in 1928 for the purpose of shipping coffee, Puerto Escondido is a favorite spot for surfers and fisherman. The beaches provide great waves and the marine life makes fishing an easy joy. In Spanish, the name Puerto Escondido means "hidden port." Puerto Escondido is not a major Mexican tourist destination and for this reason many people consider it to be one of the most attractive southern destinations in Mexico. The rustic ambience has merged with the modern hotels that have sprung up to accommodate the desire of visitors, but the isolated and relaxed environment can still be felt blowing in the warm ocean air of Puerto Escondido.
