Elmcroft was built in 1895 for Francis T. Frost. He was the first Mayor of the Town of Smiths Falls, a distinguished Member of Parlament, and later, a Senator. The Frost family was instrumental in the economic and social growth of the town. The Frost & Wood company grew to be the largest manufacturer of farm implements east of Toronto and had worldwide sales. The largest employer of the town closed in 1955. Dr. Penny's office, the Ketchum house or the Frost Mansion - these are the names by which the townsfolk know this house.
