The art museum Vestsjaellands Kunstmuseum is situated only a few steps from the hotel; and it has a special collection of Russian icons. In 1142 the South Zealand magnate Asser Rig founded a monastery at the lake Soroe Soe. His son Bishop Absalon extended the monastery; so that it soon became the largest and richest in Northern Europe. Moreover; the town surrounding the monastery became an important town in the Middle Ages. For centuries; the Danish kings paid much attention to the monastery; and therefore not only Bishop Absalons but also several other Danish kings graves are to be found in the monastery church today. One of the most famous chronicles of Denmarks history; Saxos Danmarkskroenike; has been written in Soroe Monastery. Hotel Postgaarden has been situated here for 330 years in the middle of the street Storgade in the old Zealand market town - close to Klosterport; Soroe Akademi and the lake. Thanks to a gentle renovation it has been possible to combine historic charm with the demands to a hotel of the present time.
