Excellent location: SKIING - maybe 2 min walk to Gondola Adam ski lift - this is the biggest/most useful lift for the mountain - maybe 3 min walk to Shirakaba 1 ski lift - mix of red and dotted green runs - in order to ski back to the hotel, you will need to ski down a short red run near Shirakaba 1 (see photo of view from window) (I did this on day 2 of learning) - the shuttle bus between the ski lifts runs every 30 min, and the shuttle stop is about 5 min walk from the hotel - the bus between different ski resorts departs from the foot of hotel Bonfire (<1 min walk) FOOD - lots of food options nearby in less than 5 min walking distance, including Cafe 4260 (variety of Japanese and Western foods, amazing mulled wine, Baileys hot chocolate), Blizzard (award winning pizza and pasta), Unjaune (the biggest burgers I've ever seen), Hakuba House (Japanese), Momochan (Japanese and some Western), Byron Bay meat pies (delicious), and a small food truck market at the foot of the hotel (approx. 8 food trucks, mostly Japanese food) TRANSPORT - we walked to the Happo Bus Terminal one day just to explore, and that was 15-20 min without skis. Walking to the train station an additional 20-30 min - however, because the hotel has a shuttle service, they can pick you up and drop you off at the end The staff are very friendly and helpful! If you need to rent equipment, talk to the staff at Bonfire - they were able to give us recommendation and discount for a rental shop just next door. There are very few ATMs in Hakuba - the closest is at Happo Bus Terminal - make sure to stock up on cash before you get to Bonfire! A *lot* of the food options are cash-only. Breakfast is provided every morning, a Japanese bento box - different every morning. Lastly, the onsen is AMAZING... there is indoor and outdoor onsen, everything is signposted in English and Japanese. Very clean, easy to access, and a delight at the end of a day! We will return here next time we visit Hakuba!
Great location right next to the Adam gondola. Although driveway was steep it was kept ice free and was easy to walk up and down with ski gear.
The Japanese breakfast was interesting the 1st couple of days but then was repeated on the 3rd day and was not what we were used to and we got sick of it. It would have been nice to have a western style breakfast option as well. Cereals and bread is pretty simple.
The indoor outdoor onsen was awesome after a massive day of snowboarding!
The Japanese style beds were a bit rough on the old back
The breakfast was really bad
Right next to ski gondola, heated room to store ski equipment, large baths were nice, rooms were spacious enough for 3 of us. Very easy walk to restaurants/bars. Bus station only a 15-20 min walk, depending on your speed.
We had Japanese family room: Futons & pillows were very thin - hard to sleep on, like sleeping direct on the floor. Even with piling 2 futons, had bruises on hips and backbone from it. Room generally too hot - no way to adjust temp (only low, med, hi settings). Breakfast was microwaved noodles and cold sandwich, hot water for tea and instant coffee - not appetizing. We went elsewhere for breakfast on other mornings. Very steep drive difficult to go up/down in ski boots. Large baths only open 4:30-8:30. Doors locked at night at 11pm (if you're one to want to stay out in the town, need to pay attention to time).
