Location!!!! Bar downstairs was superb, and bed/pillows were very comfortable.
Refuse directly outside bathroom window. Fairly loud music until quite late (not too bad but certainly noticable).
Very pleasant bar staff. Comfortable bed. The location is good if you are comfortable with some street/club noise.
The bed side lights were hanging off the wall, one with no bulb, the other bulb non-working. There were 4 paltry tea bags and no coffee on arrival and staff were unable to supply any until the following afternoon. The chandelier was also faulty. The TV did not work (throughout our 2-night stay). We noted all the above to the owner on our first morning in as helpful a way as possible and I requested a partial refund which was side-stepped. Then when we returned in late afternoon for a rest, we opened the room door to find the owner, his brother and an electrician all in our room trying to repair the lights and TV. This went on for quite some time so we were unable to occupy our room and we were offered free drinks. Nevertheless I felt I had to again ask for a partial refund - our room was patently not fit for occupation. Once again, side-stepped. At a whacking E450 for 2 nights, we felt royally ripped off. At that price, you have a right to expect at least a basically functioning room as advertised. We did not. And it is useless having expensive gimmicks like a Smeg fridge if the only thing in it is cans of pop (fresh milk?) or illuminated taps and underfloor shower lighting if the basic lighting is dangerous (health and safety!) or a large drawer unit if there is nowhere to hang wet coats. Style over content I'm afraid. A very spoilt 'special' birthday weekend.
Bitterbal isn't so much a hotel as a bar with a few rooms upstairs, which gives the place an informal (even by Amsterdam standards), slightly improvised, but (as anywhere else in Amsterdam) friendly feel. The bar itself does some excellent gin & tonics and has a fine line in 'bitterballen', whence it takes its name: a Dutch type of meatball. The staff are lovely and young and super laid-back (even by Amsterdam standards...), though also not perhaps always one hundred percent on top of their 'hospitality as a service' game. Still, you're dealing with bar tenders who are also handling a few guests as a sideline, not with professional hotel receptionists or concierges, and that in itself has its very own charm... Our room was clean and of a decent size with a cool double shower, and the location is superb: you're within walking distance of practically everything that matters, and if you can handle some steep stairs as part of your daily exercise routine, then you should be very happy here.
As you'd expect from a building of this age and type that is essentially run as a b'n'b, there are a few very minor drawbacks: the water pressure in the fabulous shower is perhaps a bit meagre, there is (as virtually everywhere else it seems in Amsterdam) a quasi-permanent draft, at least one of the light bulbs didn't work on a bedside lamp, and the extra duvet we asked for from the delightful bar staff never showed up, but hey: you're in Amsterdam! You've got canals and boats and museums and quite possibly the nicest people all about town, so these are quibbles, at most. Just go with the flow and you'll be fine.
Great location cheap clean couldn’t ask for more
The flights of stairs thankfully we were on floor one
The croissants & staff were great.
Compensation for the broken TV for half our stay. No offer if anything. Not even a free drink !
